The Latest

Apparently, the new big controversy going around both gaming and wider geeky circles is the topic of so-called “fake nerd girls”: hot girls that pretend to like video games, or comic books, or whatever, but they don’t really, and some people — mostly “real gamer boys” — find this upsetting.

…it seems to me more that, like the Evangelical Christian who thinks atheists and Muslims spend every minute of their days dreaming of ways to re-kill Jesus, there’s a bit of egotistical wish fulfillment going on; a secret desire for something masquerading as an overwrought grievance. … It must be nice to believe that all hot women everywhere need your personal approval to survive but they don’t. Don’t flatter yourself, and don’t pretend you hate the idea.

And before you get angry at any accusations there, remember the alternative theory is that you hate all women all the time, and have contrived this “fake nerd girl” bullshit as a rather insidious way of ensuring your favorite conventions and communities remain a hostile place to women who risk being put under an unwarranted judicial microscope should they dare express themselves.

Crying Through The Laughs - Jimquisition

This sums up my feelings toward the Great Apathetic Character Plague of the 2000’s quite succinctly.

Video games in particularly are inundated with apathetic characters, and the Final Fantasy series is a great example. Though it’s certainly not impossible for a story to be engaging with brooding main characters, it certainly would be nice to have a bit more variety.

Had to search for a repost on tumblr of this.

Love the perspective on Final Fantasy IX.
